It’s obvious that today our country is undergoing an enormous health crisis. We have more heart disease, cancer, and obesity than any other industrialized nation. We also have one of the top health care systems in the world. We have more technology available to us than ever before– more advanced imaging/screening, better surgical techniques, more highly trained doctors. How, then, are we not healthier than we’ve ever been before? Where is the breakdown?
As a chiropractor, I get to see our nation’s mindset at work in my practice. I am confronted with the questions such as, “What caused this? How did it happen? What did I do?” pretty much every day at InnerSun Family Chiropractic, LLC. It’s almost as if we’re asleep at the wheel of our own lives. We forget that wellness and disease are cumulative processes. Both illness and wellness are the result of daily habits…moment-by-moment choices we make in our everyday lives that move us either closer to health or closer to disease over time (months, years, decades.)
The truth of the matter is this: our health is the direct result of the personal choices we make and have made previously every day of our lives. Disease doesn’t “happen” to us: we grow it. Yes, our genetic predisposition plays a role but as more relevant research arises in the area of epigenetics, it is less of an influence than previously thought.
What does this mean? The manner in which a gene expresses itself is a direct result of the environment it is in. I find this encouraging: it means we have control. Type I Diabetes runs in my family. Knowing that I have a genetic predisposition towards it, if I consistently reduce my intake of processed foods and sugar (i.e. control the environment) my chances of developing it (of the gene being turned on) are likewise reduced.
It’s more important than ever to take proactive measures that will help optimize our health. Better nutrition, more water, and daily exercises can ensure that there will be enough life in your years as we age. And we need to keep this in mind for our kids as well. Chiropractic care has been shown to improve immune function, reduce the progression of the degenerative process, and improve the overall function of our body. Keep in mind that by the time symptoms develop, the problem is already there. Take the time to have you and your family checked– you’ll both optimize health and reduce health care costs at the same time. Now that’s a win-win!
